The essentials to pack in your labour bag

As you approach 36 weeks of pregnancy we encourage you to begin to pack your bag, wherever you intend to birth your baby. Following  birth you will normally stay in hospital from 6 to 48 hours, so you will need to bring enough clothes and personal items for this period. What you choose to bring is your personal choice, here are some suggestions:

  • Any medication you require (please make sure you give this to the midwife when she admits you)
  • Toiletries
  • Bath towel (we will provide a towel for you after labour)
  • Large t-shirt or old nightie for labour
  • Cotton wool for cleaning your baby's bottom
  • Dressing gown
  • Nursing bra
  • Slippers/flip flops
  • Breast pads if intending to breast feed
  • Nightwear
  • Daywear
  • Maternity sanitary pads (not provided)
  • If you are choosing to formula feed please bring in formula in disposable ready-made cartons and your own bottles and teats. We will provide you with a microwave sterilising bag
  • Underwear
  • Babygros, vests, hat, cardigan, scratch mitts
  • Disposable nappies (not provided)
  • Playlist - blue tooth speakers provided in each labour room
  • Reading material
  • Pen
  • Phone charger
  • Snacks for labour for you and your partner
  • If you have chosen to collect colostrum please bring in your frozen colostrum in a labelled bag. Each syringe should also be labelled
