Smoke-free Trust

Our hospitals are smoke-free areas. We ask you not to smoke or vape anywhere on our grounds, and we can help you quit during your hospital stay.

All of our hospital sites are smoke-free. You must leave the hospital site if you wish to smoke or vape - there are no designated smoking areas on any of our sites. This applies to patients, staff and visitors.

People seen smoking or vaping will be respectfully asked to stop. Being a smoke-free Trust helps us create a healthier environment for everyone.

Our smoke-free policy for patients

If you are a patient on our wards, here for an appointment or attending our Urgent Treatment Centre or Emergency Department, our clinical teams will not be able to facilitate you smoking or vaping.

If you are visiting us for a planned or urgent appointment, we respectfully ask that you refrain from smoking on our site. Your GP or local pharmacy can offer support if you're trying to quit.

Support to help you quit during your hospital stay

If you are staying on one of our wards as an inpatient and think you may find it difficult not to smoke during your stay, support is available. We can offer:

✅Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)
✅Fast-acting products to help manage cravings
✅Advice and support from trained staff

Please speak to a member of staff if:

  • You would like help managing nicotine cravings
  • You would like stop smoking advice
  • You are struggling with being unable to smoke during your stay

Our Smoking Cessation Team can support you to stop smoking during your stay, and can refer you to community-based stop smoking services to continue your support when you return home. Speak with your care team, who will contact our Smoking Cessation service on your behalf.

Pregnancy and smoking

Protecting your baby from tobacco smoke is one of the best things you can do to give your child a healthy start in life. Cigarettes contain harmful chemicals, so smoking while pregnant harms your baby. Giving up smoking is hard, but your midwife will be able to support you and can refer you to services that can help you to stop smoking. If you are pregnant and are dependent on nicotine, speak to your midwife.
