About us

The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) is a short stay assessment and admissions facility for patients requiring specialist medical, surgical or mental health assessment and/or opinion.

Patients are referred here by their GP, an Emergency Department (A&E) doctor or an outpatient department.

The Acute Medical Unit is staffed by dedicated doctors and nurses and supported by specialist teams.

As the Acute Medical Unit is a short stay facility, patients may be transferred to another ward for further care and/or treatment.

Patients requiring admission for further investigations and treatment for more than 24-48 hours will be transferred to a suitable ward. For short admissions you will most likely remain on the Acute Medical Unit.

The Acute Medical Unit is part of our Access and Medicine Division.

Visiting times

You can read more about our visiting restrictions here.

Please note that children under 10 years old are not allowed in the EAU. Visitors must also book visiting on the day by calling the ward.
