Liver health checks for people at risk of liver disease – coming to Godalming this July

Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust's Liver Health Team will be in Godalming on Friday 10 July, offering free checks to eligible people who may be at risk of liver disease.

Am I eligible?

These checks are for people with specific risk factors for liver disease - they're not a general health check. The team can scan anyone aged 35-70 with one or more of the following:

  • Past or current history of a blood-borne virus, including Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C.
  • Diabetes.
  • Known or suspected fatty liver.
  • Long-term heavy alcohol consumption of more than 50 units per week.

Liver disease often has no symptoms in the early stages - yet when caught early, it is treatable and the liver can make a full recovery. A FibroScan is a simple, quick and painless scan that can detect signs of liver damage before symptoms appear.

The team will be offering free scans in their mobile scanning van at Godalming Crown Court Car Park, GU7 1HR, on Friday 10 July, between 8am and 4pm. Appointments must be booked in advance - limited drop-in slots may be available on the day if spaces remain.

The scan takes around 20 minutes and you'll receive your results on the day. If any signs of early liver damage are found, a follow-up hospital appointment will be arranged.

Michelle Gallagher, Hepatology Consultant at Royal Surrey, said:

"Finding liver disease early gives the best chance of successful treatment. But because liver disease often has no symptoms, many people don't know something may be wrong. That's why we bring free liver scans directly to local communities."

How to book

Appointments must be booked in advance. If you are eligible for a scan, you can book your appointment in advance online (opens in new tab).

If you are unsure if you are eligible or have any questions, email the Liver Health Team.
