Katie is ‘Rising Star’ in South East Healthcare Science Awards
Congratulations to Katie Ryan, a Trainee Clinical Scientist in Royal Surrey’s Medical Physics Team, who took home the award for Rising Star at the South East Healthcare Science Awards.
The awards celebrate excellence and innovation in healthcare science and were presented by Professor Dame Sue Hill, Chief Scientific Officer for England.
Nominated by Emma Bolt and Mel Cunningham, Katie received the Rising Star accolade in recognition of her exceptional contributions to healthcare science early in her career.
Katie said: “I had no idea I’d been nominated for this award so it was a complete surprise when I received an email saying I’d won. I initially didn’t believe it and thought it might be a phishing email, but my manager assured me it was real.”
While working on her Scientist Training Programme in Radiation Safety and Diagnostic Radiology, Katie took on leadership of the South East trainee network, which helps create opportunities for healthcare science trainees to develop professionally.
Last year she was also selected to join a special interest group organised by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), sitting on the Diagnostic Radiology Panel.
As well as highlighting her leadership and special interest group IPEM achievements, Katie’s award nomination includes praise for the teaching events she has organised on genetics, equality and diversity, communication, sustainability and reflective practice, as well as her efforts to create safe networking spaces and peer support for early career scientists.
Emma Bolt, Clinical Scientist, said: “This award is so well deserved and I’m delighted that Katie has been recognised. She is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about her work and about supporting other trainee scientists. The whole team is extremely proud that she’s achieved this award.”
The awards’ South East region spans Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, covering 31 NHS trusts.
