Hats off to Jody for beanie-ficent donation

Staff holding beanie hats

Chemotherapy patients are benefiting from a hat-tastic donation of 40 hand-crocheted beanie hats made by Jody Halfacre from Farnborough.

The soft and beautifully made beanies were handed out on Royal Surrey’s Chilworth Day Unit to patients feeling the chill after their cold cap treatment, or because of hair loss after chemotherapy.

Emma Masters, Lead Nurse for Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT), said: “Chilworth patients were thrilled to receive the colourful beanies. This is such a kind and thoughtful gesture, which definitely cheered up the day for quite a few people..”

Jody said: “Inspired by my own and my relatives’ experiences of staying in hospital, and being someone who feels the cold, I launched Meadowbank Crochet to make cosy hats and provide a small source of comfort for patients in hospital.

“When I dropped into Royal Surrey with my donation, I received a lovely welcome from staff on Chilworth Day Unit, and their appreciation made all my efforts feel really worthwhile. If you received a beanie hat, I hope it brightened your day.”

Jody’s project offers hand-crocheted beanie hats to both hospitals and care homes and Royal Surrey is the first hospital she has donated to so far.

Each hat takes between three to five hours to make and the project is almost entirely self-funded. If you would like to donate, visit Meadowbank Crochet or the Meadowbank Crochet Amazon Wish List. All donations are used to make beanie hats for patients.

If you crochet or knit and would like to get involve, please contact Jodie via her website.
