We provide safe and compassionate care every day to patients with a wide range of breathing difficulties and conditions.

We provide investigations and treatments for all patients with respiratory presentations for the following conditions:  

  • Asthma
  • Bronchiecatasis
  • Chronic obstructive lung disease
  • Dysfunctional breathing pattern disorder   
  • Interstitial lung disease and pulmonary fibrosis 
  • Lung cancer and mesothelioma 
  • Pneumonia 
  • Pleural diseases 
  • Sarcoidosis 
  • Sleep-disordered breathing 
  • Tuberculosis 
  • Unexplained breathlessness

Service details

Care for our respiratory patients takes place in our inpatient and outpatient clinics. They're based at the main hospital in Guildford and our community hospitals in Cranleigh, Haslemere and Milford.

Our clinics are led by an expert multidisciplinary team consisting of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. There are also joint speciality clinics with oncology and rheumatology. Services include:

  • Urgent Suspected Lung Cancer (USC) with thoracic surgeon input
  • Integrated Respiratory Service (IRS) care
  • Tuberculosis (TB)
  • Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)
  • Sleep and Ventilation 

Specialist investigations can also be arranged. These include:

  • Bronchoscopy
  • Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS)
  • Lung function 
  • Pleural Interventions 
  • Radiology-guided Biopsy 
  • Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET) 
  • Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan

Who is eligible for the service?

Patients with reported respiratory symptoms aged 16 years and above.

How to access the service?

Patient access is via your GP Service.

If your symptoms are a medical emergency, please contact 111 or present to hospital, as appropriate.

GP information 

  • We take referrals via the national eRS.
  • We offer clinical advice via advice and guidance. This guidance may, if appropriate, result in an expedited appointment. However, please be advised due to significant waiting lists, we are having to be more stringent with expedited appointments. We ask for your continued patience and support during this period.
  • Please refer Urgent Suspected Cancer (USC) referral via eRS, unless a GP is set up to use Direct Access to CT.
  • For any general respiratory inquiries other than those listed above, please get in touch with our admin team at rsch.respmedsec@nhs.net.
  • In case of a clinical emergency, please send the patient to A&E for emergency review.

Integrated Respiratory Service (IRS)

The Integrated Respiratory Service is a highly multi-professional team providing specialist care to patients with chronic long term respiratory conditions.  

The service operates across the hospital and community settings ensuring that patients are able to access specialist input closer to home. 

The service is delivered in line with the most up to date evidence-based practice for patients diagnosed with the following specified conditions; 

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Asthma
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)
