Royal Surrey’s Radiology Digital and AI Manager, Mike Jones, was invited to present at 10 Downing Street last week, as part of a showcase highlighting how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming lives across the UK.

Marking the Government’s AI Opportunities Action Plan: One Year On, Mike shared how Royal Surrey has successfully implemented AI into chest imaging. Addressing the Secretary of State for Business and Trade and the Prime Minister, alongside industry leaders from major technology companies, he outlined how the tool was adopted at Royal Surrey in 2024 and rolled out to the trust’s Emergency Department last spring.

The AI tool, Annalise.ai/Harrison.ai, examines chest X-rays to identify up to 124 possible health issues in patients’ lungs, including serious conditions like cancer and collapsed lungs.

By notifying medical teams about potential problems, it helps doctors and reporting radiographers make faster, more accurate decisions, allowing for earlier detection of cancer and quicker treatment of life-threatening conditions.

After the event Mike had the opportunity to meet privately with the Prime Minister. He said: “It was a wonderful surprise to be invited and a real honour to be the only NHS staff member representing the national chest project at the event. It was great to have some time with the Prime Minister, who was really interested in what we are doing at Royal Surrey and the impact it has on our patients.”
