Apprenticeships

At Royal Surrey, we are committed to supporting our staff, nurturing their skills to help develop their careers. Our apprenticeship scheme combines vocational and academic learning, providing the means to gain a recognised qualification, while continuing to earn a salary.

Apprenticeships are for anyone over the age of 16. We have a variety of apprenticeships to choose from at many levels, from Level 2 (GCSE) to level 7 (Master’s degree).

Whether you’re interested in clinical or non-clinical roles, there’s an apprenticeship for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is an apprenticeship for?

Apprenticeship eligibility criteria can vary, but generally, anyone aged 16 or over can apply for an NHS apprenticeship. Specific requirements may depend on the role and level of the apprenticeship.

How is an apprenticeship delivered?

Apprenticeships are made up of contracted work hours (80%) and study time (20%) They are delivered in partnership with an approved training provider.

What apprenticeships are available?

The Trust currently delivers the 19 apprenticeship standards. These include Clinical and non-clinical options delivered from level 2 (GCSE) to level 7 (masters).

How long does an apprenticeship last?

Apprenticeships can vary in length from one to five and a half years, based on a 30-hour working week.

What qualifications do I need to start an apprenticeship at an NHS hospital?

Qualification requirements vary by role, but generally, you will need at least a secondary education (GCSEs or O-levels) for most apprenticeships. For nursing roles, specific qualifications are required.

Can I apply if I work part-time hours?

Working fewer than 30 hours a week is not a barrier for most apprenticeships. Where this is the case, the standard duration of the apprenticeship will be extended. There are some apprenticeships where you will need to complete a set number of placement hours for professional registration which will mean it may not be possible to work part time hours. Am I responsible for any costs?

While we pay your salary and tuition fees, you will need to pay for your own travel and subsistence.

What happens when I complete my apprenticeship?

While employers are not obliged to offer a position once an apprenticeship has been completed, the majority of our apprentices will be offered the opportunity to stay on or be supported to progress to a higher-level apprenticeship on completion.
