Royal Surrey frailty work recognised with award at global conference

James Adams, Consultant Geriatrician, and Michelle Bull, Programme Manager

Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust has received international recognition for its innovative work to improve care for older people living with frailty.

James Adams, Consultant Geriatrician, and Michelle Bull, Programme Manager, were named runner up in the Patient and Care Giver Award at the 26th International Conference on Integrated Care (ICIC26), one of the world’s leading forums for integrated care research, policy and practice.

The award recognised their abstract, “Transforming the care of older people through an integrated frailty crisis pathway”, which showcases how the Trust is improving experiences and outcomes for patients and carers through more joined up, personalised care.

The conference attracted health and care leaders from more than 50 countries, with James and Michelle presenting three sessions and a poster. Their presentations demonstrated how Royal Surrey is strengthening early frailty identification, improving integrated frailty crisis pathways, and enabling earlier, more personalised interventions for older people. The poster highlighted the work of the Frailty Academy.

James said: “We were delighted to present multiple pieces of work at the conference, and to receive an award that recognises Royal Surrey’s leadership in frailty and integrated care.

“Receiving acknowledgment from the International Foundation for Integrated Care is a fantastic achievement.

“It provides a unique opportunity to influence practice both nationally and internationally.

“We have already been approached by international contacts wanting to explore our pathway, our approaches to managing transformation and the work of our Academy”
