Access and Medicine Champion

Each of our six clinical divisional champion awards recognise individuals and teams that consistently demonstrate exceptional commitment to patient-centred care, through empathy, communication and respect. They collaborate with colleagues, innovate for improvement and put their patients at the heart of all they do. Here’s what their colleagues wrote about them in the nominations.

Bethan Garner, High Intensity Lead ED

Bethan Garner, High Intensity Lead ED

Bethan’s drive, passion and tenacity have resulted in a significant reduction in Emergency Department (ED) attendance among some of our high intensity users.

Since she started working in the department two years ago, the reduction has been of real consequence, benefitting both the patients and staff involved. She works tirelessly with different stakeholders — community mental health teams, GPs, social services and patients to improve patient care and experience. Her approach is non-judgemental and inclusive, but also practical and incredibly clear, consequently staff feel much more confident in managing patients with often complex needs.

She quietly fixes problems in a way that provides a real example to other colleagues. She’s a true unsung hero in the Emergency Department.

Khelvin Jocson, Advanced Care Practitioner (ACP)

Khelvin’s dedication to patient care is exemplary and his drive to improve service provision and patient experience is truly remarkable.

As the first ACP in medicine, he has made an enormous contribution to the cardiology department, particularly through his work on redesigning the referral criteria for the Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic. This has enhanced service efficiency, patient flow and demonstrated his exceptional leadership and approachable, supportive manner.

His work was recognised by a Best of the Best national award from the British Cardiovascular Society. This accolade reflects his high standards and real-world impact. His initiative has made a tangible difference in improving cardiology services, ensuring timely care for those in need, and inspiring colleagues across disciplines.
