I have been a patient of the hospital since 2008 when I was diagnosed with cancer and heard about its excellent reputation for the treatment of many types of cancer. The foundation trust was set up in 2009 and I have been a patient governor since then.

Both as a volunteer (taking a survey around the wards) and as a governor, I have listened to patients’ concerns about, and praise of, their treatment. As a member of the Patient Experience committee, I try to understand the complex issues affecting patients and how these are resolved. I am particularly interested in the work of St Luke’s Cancer Centre.

Research is hope for the future and I am proud that Royal Surrey is very active in drug trials, new clinical methods eg enhanced recovery, the use of robotics in surgery and in many other ways to advance medical knowledge. We have very successful Research Days and there is an atmosphere of openness to discuss new treatments.

I am a retired chartered management accountant, economics graduate, married with children aged 19 and 15 and I live in West Sussex.
