I’ve been resident in Dorking for two periods in my life, as a child and adolescent and permanently since 2002. In my nursing career I have had experience in clinical, managerial and educational arenas, both locally and across London, South and South West England. I have been employed at the Royal Surrey twice, in the 1980s as a Senior Nurse and again in 2012/3 as a member of the Clinical Audit Team, so have seen different aspects of the Trust at work.
I am involved in the community in Dorking as a member of Rotary, until recently as an invigilator at one of the comprehensive schools and volunteer for local activities as well as developing links with the local authority.
I am still involved in the world of healthcare as an interviewer for potential healthcare students at the University of Surrey, and a member of the Users and Carers group that gives input to academic staff on research and curricula development.
I am married to Phil Smith, a trainer in the IT Department, and work on the Research Park on day a week.
I believe firmly NHS Trusts need to be responsive to the local community whilst still innovating, and meeting Departmental demands, to enhance care to patients and significant others. The Trust's most valuable asset is their workforce, both employed and volunteer, who support these endeavours in their areas of expertise.
I believe that my past and current experiences would enable me to challenge the Trust as and when appropriate, to ensure the continuing success of the organisation.
