Papillon Team awarded BIR service award

Congratulations to our innovative Papillon Team for winning a British Institute of Radiology (BIR) ‘Make it Better’ service award for their Papillon service.

Papillon therapy is an innovative way to treat rectal cancer. The service was set up in April 2014, with Royal Surrey being one of four hospitals in the country that offer it. This means that patients have to endure long travel times from all over the South of England for their treatment.

To combat this, the team devised an upgraded service where patients only had to attend hospital once, by organising their Papillion clinic in the morning and their treatment in the afternoon. They worked to devise a DVD, funded by the BRIGHT charity, of patient information, sent to the patients in advance of their clinic appointment.

This has improved the quality of life of their patients and also increased the number of patients choosing to undergo the treatment as they feel prepared and informed.

Well done team!
