Innovative Mobile Chemotherapy Unit shortlisted for BJN Award

Congratulations to our Oncology Department on their shortlist for a British Journal of Nursing (BJN) Award. This is for the innovation involved in the set-up and care provided at their Mobile Chemotherapy Unit.

Opened by Dame Judi Dench in February 2020, the unit has proven to be highly beneficial to patients who have had to travel far to receive treatment. Treatment can often make patients feel fatigued. Having treatment closer to home has resulted in patients tolerating the appointment schedule. For these reasons, the unit has been essential in helping us to work towards our True North goal of improving patient experience by delivering treatment closer to home.

During Covid-19 it has been especially important as it has allowed Oncology to maintain capacity, providing essential cancer care at a time when services were limited.

Sarah Branch, Oncology Matron, said: “It has been lovely to be shortlisted, especially in such difficult times. We have worked hard here at St Luke’s to continue treatment for all our cancer patients through this pandemic and trying to keep them in safe environment.”
