About the service
Acute medicine is the specialty concerned with the diagnosis, management and non-surgical treatment of unusual or serious diseases. In our Ambulatory Emergency Care area, we provide facilities to maximise treatment of adult emergency medical patients on the same day, without need for full admission. We are open seven days a week and provide an innovative ambulatory care facility for medical patients.
We assess, diagnose and treat many patients that do not require the services of the Emergency Department unit but need to be seen by an emergency doctor or specialist. We manage our patients in a timely and clinically appropriate way with fast access to assessment and investigations without admission to a hospital bed at all or for admission for only a number of hours.
You may be referred to AEC by your GP, from the emergency department streaming assessment or an outpatient clinic.
