Our Birth and Beyond classes are facilitated by experienced practicing Midwives, Natalie and Caroline. These paid for classes are open to any families who wish to attend.
The money from our paid Birth and Beyond Courses and classes comes to maternity, helping to fund educational opportunities for our staff and our free class provision, benefiting the whole maternity community.
Our Birth and Beyond classes are taught in small groups compared to traditional antenatal classes. All sessions are taught online via Facebook Rooms, which works a bit like Zoom, so that all the members of the group can see each other and interact.
Parents on our online courses have developed fantastic peer support networks by utilising their dedicated Facebook groups and Rooms to get to know each other, creating their own WhatsApp groups and meeting up in person within the government’s guidance.
Although our classes are currently online our complete packages are still offered by geographical area so that you are getting to know parents who live near to you. This will make it easier to meet up in person when guidance allows, especially with a young baby, and for those dependent on public transport.
We regret that due to the popularity of our classes we are not always able to accommodate everyone who would like to attend. We operate waiting lists via Eventbrite and will consider running additional paid classes if waiting lists reach viable class numbers and all neighbouring dates are full.
“The sessions were engaging and incredibly reassuring. I learnt so much and felt more prepared to give birth. The fact that it is delivered by midwives at the hospital means they are really well placed to answer specific questions. There was also the added advantage that you can take part in the comfort of your own home. I would highly recommend the course and I can’t thank [the midwives] enough for the information and reassurance they provided. They were always happy to answer any questions.” Birth and Beyond, June 2020
Below you will find a wide range of our paid for antenatal classes at the hospital. These are designed to offer women more choice when it comes to their antenatal education.
For any questions regarding these classes, please email rsch.birthandbeyond@nhs.net.
All of the sessions in our Complete Package, from labour and birth through to baby massage, are taught with the same group of parents so there are ample and ongoing opportunities to develop that all important support network.
As our classes and courses are currently online you may attend any of our classes for any location, however as many parents still want to meet other local mums and dads, we have scheduled classes to match geographical areas and continuity teams. We hope that this will make it easier for you to meet up in person as government guidance allows.

Helping mums to relax.
Spending a little bit of time every week on relaxation has such a positive effect on the pregnant person and their developing baby-reducing adrenaline and cortisol and promoting the love hormone Oxytocin.
During the 30-45 minute lunch time session, we will focus on ways of increasing relaxation and letting go of fear.
Each week we will have a live discussion on the scheduled topic followed by time for questions. There will also be a pre-recorded hypnobirthing script or relaxation technique uploaded weekly and recommendations for things to work on during the week.
All resources will remain in the private group for the duration of the course and for up to a week after the final session, giving you plenty of time to catch up with the topics at your connivence and plenty of opportunities to listen to and practice the relaxation techniques. Some of the resources will be made availableat the end of the course so that you can continue your practice.
Topics explored include:

Over the course of the evening, we will explore:
Why water birth?
Safety, Risks and Special Considerations
Caring for you and your baby in the water
Please note that due to the nature of the class we will be sharing images of labour and birth in water.
This session is taught online via Facebook Rooms, which works like Zoom. All members of the class can see each other and interact if they wish (although you can switch off your camera if you prefer).
