Study Set Up
In order to conduct research you will need to apply for the following approvals;
- Health Research Authority (HRA)- The Health Research Authority brings together the HRA’s assessment of governance and legal compliance with the independent ethical opinion by a Research Ethics Committee (REC). HRA Approval is for all project based research involving the NHS and Health and Social Care (HSC) that is being led from England;

- NHS Research Ethics Committee – REC approval is required for all research projects. The only exception to this is studies of NHS staff.
Applying for approvals
Applying for the relevant research approvals is completed online via the Integrated Research Application System (IRAS) at the link below;
Setting up an account is simple all you need is an email address. Once registered you will be prompted to create a research project.
Before your application can be submitted it will need to be reviewed and authorized by the Cheif Investigator and the Sponsor organisation.
Where the sponsor organisation is the Royal Surrey County Hospital authorisation should be obtained from the Head of RD&I.
You will need to have the following study documentation ready to support your research submission;
Note: when finalising your documentation please ensure they have a version and date which is included in the footer of the document.
- Patient Information Sheet
- Patient consent form
- GP letter
- Schedule of assessment
- Statement of activities
Obtaining Trust Approval
Any Research within the trust will require the RD&I department to confirm that the trust has the capacity and capability to deliver a study and ensure the appropriate contracts are in place.
In order for RD&I to make this assessment research teams are to complete the study delivery assessment form.
