Bowel Cancer Screening
Surrey Bowel Cancer Screening Centre
The Bowel Cancer Screening programme is a National programme delivered across the whole of England and offered to subjects aged
60 – 74. Older persons can opt in (call 0800707 6060).
The Surrey Centre covers a population of 1.6 million people across Surrey, W Sussex and North Hants. Subjects are sent a test kit to complete every 2 years commencing at aged 60 which looks for blood in the stool. If the kit is positive, subjects are invited to a screening assessment clinic prior to a colonoscopy procedure. Positive results do not necessarily mean cancer and are often caused by polyps which are subsequently removed at colonoscopy. If a cancer is identified within screening it is treated at the location of patient choice.
The Surrey Centre is also a pilot site for the roll out of Bowelscope – a ‘one off’ flexi sigmoidoscopy offered at aged 55.
There is no test kit involved with this procedure. A self-administered enema is sent out to patients wishing to attend.
The service is being rolled out by GP practice as capacity grows within the endoscopic service across the region.
The Bowelscope service is provided at RSCH, Frimley Park Hospital, East Surrey Hospital and will commence at Cobham Day surgery unit (Epsomedical) from November 2017 for ‘live’ GP practices.
