Respiratory Health Event at the Royal Surrey

The Royal Surrey County Hospital is holding a Respiratory Health Event for Foundation Trust members on Thursday 24th March at 7pm in the Education Centre at the hospital.  Members are welcome to bring friends and family along to the evening.

The evening will be an opportunity to learn more about the respiratory department and the conditions treated at the Trust. Respiratory consultant Dr William McAllister and other members of the Royal Surrey County Hospital respiratory team will talk about the range of work undertaken by the department.  The respiratory unit is a very innovative team offering a wide range of respiratory services, some of which are traditionally not available in District General Hospitals.

Dr McAllister comments;

“We see over 3000 patients a year in the respiratory department and our service offers seamless care between GPs and the hospital. We provide prompt outpatient treatment and investigation for a wide range of respiratory conditions including asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), cancer, allergic lung disease, chronic bronchitis and emphysema.”

Dr McAllister and the team will be speaking about a wide range of respiratory health issues and developments in respiratory care at the Trust.  The Respiratory department recently began an exciting new sleep study to investigate and manage problems with breathing while asleep. Until very recently these sleep disorders were all managed in London teaching hospitals.

The team has also developed an award winning scheme which allows nursing and physiotherapy teams to look after people with acute and chronic lung disease at home. Hospital admissions are prevented by rapid referral to the hospital team who, in conjunction with advice from hospital specialists, will care for people in their homes.

The Royal Surrey chest ward, Albury, is a very high standard acute respiratory unit where patients with a range of serious illnesses are managed. In the past, all patients who had to be put on ventilators were managed in the intensive care unit but many are now treated fully conscious on bedside ventilators on the Albury ward. Previously patients requiring long term ventilation at home were referred to London hospitals but the Royal Surrey has recently begun offering this service locally as well.

If you would like further information about this members’ health event or to register for the event please contact Jo Green on 01483 571122 ext 2318 or e-mail rsc-tr.membership@nhs.net.  If Royal Surrey Foundation Trust members wish to bring friends or family with them who are not currently members, they will need to sign up to join the Trust during the evening.
