Preceptorship

The Preceptorship Programme is a competency based framework which sees each candidate supported by a workplace mentor and the Practice Development Team. As well as scheduled ‘off the ward’ training and assessment, candidates must also complete ‘on-the-ward’ competencies to help them excel in the acute hospital setting.

Programme Information

Weeks 1-2

Induction to clinical area

Booked onto clinical/corporate induction.

Meet preceptor, set initial objectives. Clinically supernumery with preceptor minimum x3/week.

Manager to have informed Practice Development Team.

Hand Hygiene assessment

Month 1

Trust/Clinical Induction including Basic Life Support, Manual Handling and fire.

Month 2-6

To complete ‘Observational Clusters 1,2,3’.

Core Clinical Skills

Oasis PAS system

Blood Transfusion Training**

LINKS Course

3 Reflections and Reading Logs

Month 6-12

To complete ‘Observational Cluster 4’ and agreed specialist competencies

Attend and reflect on MDT meeting

IV Additives **

Medical Devices**

End of Life Care

Basic Ward Management, including Co-Mentor

C3i White Belt Training

3 Reflections and Reading Logs

Preceptee Support Meetings (as required up to 4x per year)

Personal study

Each candidate should anticipate undertaking up-to 3 hours per week of personal study which will include; additional reading relevant to the programme, reflective writing completion and study day records.

** Competencies need to be completed before preceptee is able to complete the programme
