1, The number of NHS staff who have been injured as a result of caring for patient that is classed as large / obese / with a high BMI / barbaric patient over the following dates:
a. 1 Jan 2011 to 31 Dec 2011
b. 1 Jan 2012 to 31 Dec 2012
c 1 Jan 2013 to 31 Dec 2013
d Jan 2014 to 31 Dec 2014
e Jan 2015 to 31 Dec 2015
The Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust does not record this specific information. The Trust categorises such incidents as either lifting incidents or physical strain incidents but the details of each individual incident would need to be interrogated to determine whether there is any reference to bariatric / overweight / obese / high BMI and injury to staff member. Between January 2011 and December 2105 a total of 185 lifting / physical strain incidents were reported and, therefore, the resultant cost of compliance due to the time required to scrutinise each incident would exceed the appropriate limit under Section 12 of the Freedom of Information Act.
For each staff member, I wish to know the following:
2, The nature of injury the staff member sustained (For example – broken back, sprained ankle, See above
3, How the injury was sustained (For example – patient fell on staff member while lifting etc) See above
4, How long (if any) the staff member needed off work See above
5, The weight of the patient if known See above
6, If a compensation claim was lodged The Trust has received no claims since 1st January 2011 relating to a staff member suffering injury as a result of caring for a large / obese patient.
7, How much compensation was paid out to the staff member N/A
