Royal Surrey County Hospital is celebrating the opening of its newly refurbished Medical Assessment Unit (MAU). The build, designed with support of the staff, has increased the MAU’s capacity from 26 to 35 beds. The Unit is now able to retain and discharge more of their own patients instead of having to transfer some patients to wards who do not need specialist based care, which could add an average of 20 hours to their length of stay. By seeing and treating more patients in MAU, the number of patients directly discharged home from the unit has increased from 30-40% to 50% in just six weeks.
The addition of a laboratory to the MAU allows them to do some patient blood tests within the unit and has led to a faster turn around times for tests.
Karen Bulley, Matron of MAU, said:
“I am very proud of the new unit and the huge contribution made by all of our staff to designing it.
“All six of the units bays are now single sex in line with the government drive to eliminate mixed sex accommodation.
“The MAU stayed open for business as usual during the redesign and I am very proud of the effort made by staff and their dedication to patients during the transition period. We would also like to thank patients for their tolerance through this process”
RSCH has invested £2 million in the redesign, which has taken 60 weeks to complete.
