Monday 27th June saw the opening of a brand new Eye Unit at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. The new unit was pleased to welcome Mrs Lovell, who was also celebrating her 105th birthday, as their first patient. Mrs Lovell was the oldest patient ever to have had surgery for cataracts at the Royal Surrey so it was double cause for celebration.
The new unit is the location for all eye surgery and offers patients a fresh, bright and modern environment for their treatment. The new unit comprises of three rooms; for patients waiting to be seen, patients having their pre-operative assessments and one for recovering after their surgery. It far surpasses the previous eye unit by providing a better patient experience and single sex areas if required.
After her surgery, Mrs Lovell was presented with flowers by Miss Anne Gilvarry, Clinical Director for Ophthalmology, and Kamala Gungah, Senior Nurse, to celebrate her birthday and for being their first patient. Senior Nurse Kamala was instrumental in implementing the development of the new unit at the Royal Surrey and was delighted to see the unit up and running. Miss Gilvarry, Kamala and the team look forward to welcoming all future patients to the new eye unit.
