Miss Carrie Newlands
Royal Surrey Maxillofacial Consultant, Miss Carrie Newlands has been awarded the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS) prize for Surgery 2011. This prize is awarded to a Fellow of the Association, within the first ten years of their consultant career, who has made a major contribution to the speciality of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery.
Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is a specialist area of surgery which looks after patients with diseases and injuries of the mouth, face, jaws and neck, and the Maxillofacial Unit at the Royal Surrey County Hospital is one of the leading units in the UK.
Miss Newlands was awarded this prize for her work as National Clinical Lead in e-Learning and for writing the Oxford Specialist Handbook in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery. She has also recently authored the National Guidelines on the management of Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer of the Head and Neck, the area in which she specialises.
Miss Newlands said:
“It is an honour to be awarded the BAOMS prize for Surgery 2011. I am thrilled, and really grateful to my colleagues and the team at the Royal Surrey for their support.”
Miss Newlands will be awarded her prize at the BAOMS Awards Ceremony during the Annual Scientific Meeting next year. The BAOMS prizes are annual awards; BAOMS members are nominated by their peers and the winners are chosen by a Council from the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Dr Christopher Tibbs, Medical Director at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, said:
“This is a hugely prestigious award. On behalf of the Trust I’d like to congratulate Miss Newlands on her award; it is very much deserved. Miss Newlands is a highly respected surgeon and well liked member of the team and this award is a fantastic reflection on her work.”
