What we do
The Woman’s Health physiotherapy team works with antenatal, postnatal and women with Gynaecological conditions in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
The team provides a comprehensive assessment and treatment programme for all Obstetric and Gynaecological conditions.
We also provide a series of Physical Preparation for childbirth classes at the hospital and at five other venues in thecommunity. Partners are welcome to attend.
These classes are very popular so early booking is strongly advised.
Obstetric TENS machines are also available to hire after 37 weeks of pregnancy. We run regular group sessions to ensure best use of the machine. These sessions can be booked in advance via the physiotherapy department.
The team also has a link in the Integrated Continence Clinic in the community run by a continence Nurse Specialist and senior physiotherapist. Referrals are via GP, district nurse or other multidisciplinary professionals.
Our aim is to promote maximum recovery to health through advice, exercises and treatments offered.
In Obstetrics we see women with low back problems, Pelvic girdle pain, Divarication Of Recti (weak/ overstretched abdominal muscles through pregnancy) muscles and continence problems. We also treat women with continence problems following perineal repairs after deliveries.
In Gynaecology we see women with bladder dysfunctions i.e. Stress Incontinence, urge or mixed incontinence or mild to moderate prolapse problems.

Outpatients are seen in the physiotherapy department on level B of the West wing of the hospital.

Our physical preparation classes are very popular, empowering and very well attended. They are one of the very few sole physiotherapy led set of three classes in the county, being offered in the hospital and in so many venues in the community.
We are constantly striving to improve and update our service with patient information leaflets and exercise leaflets based on current evidence.
We work closely with our multidisciplinary team members to produce guidelines and care pathways in line with the national guidelines.
