Eating a healthy and varied diet during pregnancy should help you get most of the vitamins and minerals that both you and baby need. However, it would is recommended that you take the following supplements:
- 10 micrograms of vitamin D each day throughout your pregnancy. You should carry on taking this even after your baby is born if you are breastfeeding.
- 400 micrograms of folic acid each day. You should take this from the moment you decided to start trying for a baby until you are 12 weeks pregnant. If you are taking anti-epileptic drugs have a family history of fetal anomalies or you have diabetes the recommended dose is 5mg per day.
Other vitamin supplements should only be taken after checking with your midwife.
DO NOT TAKE vitamin A supplements or any supplements containing vitamin A, as too much could harm your baby.
