Maternity Education Classes: Frequently Asked Questions

I have had a baby before, which classes would best suit me?

There are two classes that  are specifically designed for ladies who have had a baby before.  The Birth and Beyond refresher is a 3 hour class that covers all the basics of labour, birth and baby care.  Other classes that aren’t specifically aimed at mums who have had a baby before, but that are very helpful are the Active Birth Workshop and the Baby Care Workshop.

Where does the money from the private antenatal classes go?

The money from the antenatal classes goes to improving the maternity environment and providing additional courses and classes for women and staff.

What If I cant afford to attend a class with a fee, but feel it would really help me?

If you feel a course would be beneficial, but you do not have the funds then please email cbarraud@nhs.net as we can subsidise some women.  This will be looked at on an individual basis and we try and include people if we can.

What is the difference between the HypnoBirthing and Active Birth class?

Active Birth lasts 3 hours and teaches you the basics of having a natural, active labour as well as breathing, massage and relaxation  techniques.  Perfect for second time mums wanting a recap and mums wishing to add to their antenatal  education. Hypnobirthing is a full day course (6 hours) in which you learn in more detail different breathing, massage, relaxation and visualisation techniques.  The focus of the day is learning techniques to keep you as calm as possible during the birth. A book and a CD are provided.  Both courses include a tour of the maternity unit.  Active Birth costs £40 and Hypnobirthing costs £100.
