Patients have awarded the Royal Surrey higher scores than last year in the latest national inpatient survey.
Patients judged that a number of improvements had been made and 91% described the care received overall as excellent, very good or good. The Royal Surrey was among the top ten hospitals in the country for providing good information in A&E, with a score of 88% and in the top 20% of hospitals for providing single sex accommodation and clear information about medication before leaving hospital.
The Healthcare Commission survey covers all hospital trusts in England and scores have been compared for 50 questions. The Royal Surrey has scored the highest mark out of all the trusts in the county in nearly half of the questions.
Sue Lewis, Director of Nursing and Operations and Deputy Chief Executive said:
“The results of this year’s inpatient survey support the hard work and dedication of all our staff to delivering the best possible care for patients. We are particularly proud of the fact that we have scored well on the issues that matter to our patients. Nearly 80% of patients felt they were treated with dignity and respect throughout their stay in hospital and 93% judged the hospital ward to be very or fairly clean.
“It is also clear that our nurses and doctors are communicating well with patients, reassuring them and their families and involving them in decision making.
“The survey also highlights where we need to make improvements and work is already underway to tackle the reasons why some patients’ discharges are delayed and we are keen to do more work to investigate the quality of food.
“It is important to us that we continually strive to improve the quality of care and service for patients and in June we will be launching an exit survey for all inpatients to complete when they are discharged. This will provide the Trust with regular feedback and the opportunity to celebrate our successes and deal with any issues as they arise.”
The Royal Surrey was also recently named as one of the 40 Top Hospitals in the country. The accolade was awarded by CHKS, who are an independent provider of healthcare intelligence and quality improvement services to the NHS. The Trust was judged on its clinical effectiveness, health outcomes, efficiency, patient experience and quality of healthcare.
