Response to Healthcare Commission Maternity Review

Jenny Hughes, Head of Midwifery said:

“We are very proud of the maternity services provided at the Royal Surrey County Hospital and in the community and know that we deliver the best care possible to women giving birth here and their babies.

“The Healthcare Commission’s Maternity Review published today has rated the trust’s services overall as Fair Performing, but there are many aspects of the review where we have scored a Better or Best Performing rating. In particular, this review has highlighted the fact that our care is very safe and we have been awarded a Best Performing mark for ensuring that there are very low levels of complications following delivery. To support this, our staff have all been trained to a very high standard.

“The Royal Surrey has also scored very highly for the quality of our antenatal classes and making sure the majority of women see the same midwife throughout their pregnancies. We also ensure that women are provided with choices during labour, the pain relief they have requested and breastfeeding support.

“But we are committed to continuing to improve the service we offer and make sure that we listen to the views of mothers who have recently given birth and others to inform those improvements.

“We are also taking action to address the staffing issues highlighted in the review and will soon be recruiting nine extra midwives.”

Ends.
