Medical Physiotherapy

We provide physiotherapy to patients admitted to the Royal Surrey County Hospital under the care of a medical consultant.

We assess and treat every patient depending on their individual needs.

We jointly formulate specific goals with each patient and work closely with other health and social care professionals to provide a holistic approach.

Patients are admitted to our wards with a wide range of medical conditions. Following an illness, patients will often experience a decline in their function and confidence.

Physiotherapy aims to maximise function and promote independence in order to facilitate discharge.

Treatments may include:

• Flexibility exercises
• Strengthening exercises
• Balance training
• Mobility practice

We also treat patients with respiratory problems. This may be a long standing chronic lung condition or an acute respiratory illness.

This may include:

• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
• Bronchiectasis
• Pulmonary Fibrosis
• Asthma
• Chest infection

Treatment may include:

• Techniques to aid secretion clearance
• Techniques to cope with breathlessness
• Self management advice
• Onward referral to community services, for example, pulmonary rehabilitation

We continually strive to improve our services in line with up to date government guidelines.

We have a team of physiotherapists, a technical instructor and a physiotherapy assistant.

Patients may be referred to physiotherapy by doctors, nurses and any other member of the health and social care team.

We cover the following consultant specialities:

• Cardiology
• Diabetes and Endocrinology
• Gastroenterology
• Respiratory
• Rheumatology

Patients are usually on the following wards:

• Merrow
• Hindhead
• Millbridge
• Albury
• Wisley

We also provide physiotherapy for patients admitted to A&E and the medical assessment unit with acute respiratory problems.
