The department is located next to the radiology department on Level B. For pregnancy/obstetric scans please contact or refer to the antenatal department.
An Ultrasound scan involves the use of very high frequency sound waves to produce images of specific areas or organs of the body. It can also be used to provide further information about certain conditions through the use of taking a tissue sample (interventional).
When we receive the request form from your referring doctor, an appointment letter will be sent to you within 2 weeks. This will also provide information about the examination and any necessary preparation.
Generally 15 to 20 minutes but this will depend on the type of scan being performed.
You should wear washable loose, comfortable fitting clothing for the procedure (hospital gowns can be provided if required).
Certain procedures will require you to starve for 6 hours before the examination or to drink a litre of water. Please read your appointment letter carefully.
The doctor who referred you for the procedure will get the report within a week of the scan.
The ultrasound examination is perfectly safe in that no x-rays or any other forms of radiation are used.
The scan will be performed by a highly skilled sonographer or radiologist.
