Paediatric Imaging

Where are children x-rayed?

Children are x-rayed throughout the Radiology department, which is located on Level B. There are also two x-rays rooms within A/E.

Procedures performed

The Radiology department offers a wide variety of examinations, using several different imaging techniques.  Plain film imaging is the most common. Your GP, outpatient clinics, A and E and the children’s ward can all refer children to radiology.

Facilities for children.

There is a children’s play area in the main waiting room equipped with various toys and books. The toilet nearest this area has a specially fitted child friendly seat. Stickers and certificates are available for children having had an x-ray.

How long will I have to wait?

We do our best to prioritise children through the department in order to minimise the waiting time.

Is there any preparation for the examination?

This will depend on the type of examination.  If the appointment is for speciality imaging you should have received instructions with your appointment.  Plain film imaging requires the removal of any clothing or jewellery that will interfere with the image.

Can family come into the x-ray room?

No. There are strict controls for the use of x-rays and avoiding unnecessary exposures to others. Working areas and behind control panels are not safe areas for children. The Radiology department does not have trained child carers and it is not always possible to arrange supervision for other children. If at all possible, please make alternative arrangements for children other than those for x-ray. This would help us ease your journey through our department.

Do you have somewhere I can change/ feed my child?

The nearest changing and nursing facilities are located in the main front reception area just outside the department. However it may be possible to offer privacy using one of the changing facilities. Please ask a member of staff.
