Mammograms are usually carried out either in conjunction with an out patient appointment in the breast clinic, or as a follow up to a breast condition.

Where is mammography?

The mammography suite is located in the Radiology Department on Level B.

What are Mammograms?

Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low dose x-ray system to examine breasts.

The Procedure

When you are ready and comfortable the female radiographer will compress  one breast at a time between the x-ray plates and take the x-ray. It may be uncomfortable but only for a short while. Two x-rays will be taken of each breast in two different positions

Who carries out the Mammogram?

Female radiographers, who have been specifically training in the field of mammography.

How should I prepare for the examination?

Wear a top with either a skirt or trousers

How long will it take?

On average the examination takes 15 minutes.

Will I need to undress?

Yes you will need to undress from the waist upwards but only whilst in the x-ray room.

Can I have a Mammogram if I have implants?

Yes, the technique is altered slightly but it is possible.

Can I have a Mammogram if I am breast feeding?

It is possible, but please ring the department before you attend to receive specific instructions.

Can a man have a mammogram?

Yes, using a slightly modified technique.

When will I receive the results?

The mammograms are reported by a Consultant Radiologist and the results are sent to the doctor who referred you, usually within two weeks.
