MRI

MRI is located in the Haste wing on Level B and can be accessed internally through Outpatients Department 2.  The MRI department is also accessible externally and is located in the brick enclosed building next to the main entrance.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive medical test that helps to diagnose and treat medical conditions. MR imaging uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures. The images can then be examined on a computer monitor, printed or copied to CD. MRI does not use ionizing radiation (x-rays).

With current knowledge the MRI is safe and there are no known biological effects. It is not advised to undergo MRI if a patient is pregnant, especially during the first trimester. Please inform the staff if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

This loud knocking and chirping noise during the scan is due to the small magnets in the machine being turned on and off. 

This will be required for some scans in order to get clearer pictures and further information.  If this is required, the consultant radiologist or referring physician will ask for an enhanced MRI scan.  A qualified MRI Radiographer will administer contrast agent (Dye) through your vein before the scan. Please inform the radiographer if you have any previous history of allergy or impaired renal or liver functions.

Generally 30 minutes per one area, but this will depend on the type of scan being performed. The maximum scan time is 60 minutes.

• A heart pacemaker;
• Surgical clips within your head;
• Certain inner ear implants;
• Neuro-electrical stimulators;
• Metal fragments within your eye or head;
• Some other implants 

Your scan will be reviewed by a consultant Radiologist and report will be sent to your referring consultant.
