Welcome to the Department of Audiological Medicine

This is a tertiary service, providing individual care to adults and children.

The department covers the population from a wide catchment area including Surrey, Hampshire, Sussex and Middlesex. We have close links with colleagues in other departments (Ear, Nose and Throat, Paediatrics, Neurology, Immunology and Clinical Genetics)

Specialist Balance Clinic:
This is a comprehensive service which covers the diagnosis and management of a variety of balance disorders. These include:

Meniere’s disease
Vestibular Migraine
Viral labyrinthitis
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
Central Vestibular Disorders

Specialist Tinnitus Clinic:
For patients with troublesome tinnitus. Patients undergo detailed assessments including a range of hearing tests. Treatment measures are tailored to suit each patient. Where appropriate they will be offered Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT). This includes detailed counselling, Relaxation Therapy and devices such as hearing aids and White Noise Generators (tinnitus maskers).  In some cases medication may be used.

Paediatric Audiology Clinic:

Children with speech and hearing disorders are seen in this clinic where a detailed assessment is carried out. Where necessary, children will be referred to the ENT Clinic, Child Development Clinic, Ophthalmology, Clinical Genetics and Speech and Language Therapy.  They may also be referred to the Audiology Department for the fitting of hearing aids.

Adults with hearing disorders:
We assess and treat adults who have hearing difficulties. In addition to carrying out detailed investigations, we provide information about assistive hearing devices, hearing protection and 'hearing tactics'.  Where necessary, patients will be referred to the Audiology Department (for hearing aids), Cochlear Implant Centres and Centres for Bone Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHA). 

 

Referral sources

GPs, ENT Specialists, Geriatricians, Cardioiogists, Paediatricians, Neurologists, Audiologist and Speech & Language Therapist and the Sensory Support Service.

The department also receives tertiary referrals in all these areas from other Hospitals.
