Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP®)

Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP®)

This two-and-a-half day course is designed to advance the practical, theoretical and personal skills necessary for the care of critically ill surgical patients.. It is aimed at surgeons and those dealing with surgical patients who are in specialist training.

Candidates receive the greatest benefit when CCrISP® is taken in the latter part of ST2. Candidates in the earlier part of specialist training (ST1) may also apply although it is strongly recommended they have six months general surgery training at F2, ST1 or ST2 level. Candidates at ST3 level and above, who have not successfully completed the CCrISP® course before, may also apply. All participants on the course should:

  • have completed at least one year of specialist training (not including house jobs);
  • have commenced six months general surgery; and
  • ideally have completed an ATLS® course - although this is not a prerequisite.

We do have some places for those non medically qualified persons who would benefit from attending the course such as surgical  nurses etc. These places are offered as an observer and a certificate of attendance will be issued for all those attending the full course. Observers are expected to take the role of the patient / nurse helper in the final scenario exam.
