About the Cedar Centre

The idea to build a separate and dedicated centre for diabetes care came from Dr Mike Smith. Built in the grounds of Royal Surrey County Hospital, it cost over a million pounds, all of it raised from charitable donations.

The architects, who are well known for their design of the Eden Project, involved patient groups and staff at the planning stage.

As diabetes and many endocrine disorders are lifelong conditions, the plan was to make the building as non-clinical as possible.

All the consulting rooms open to a central atrium with a play area, drinks machines and a television. The roof windows make it feel light and airy. We even have a bird feeder, the occasional bunny and a pheasant!

We are very fortunate to have several large artworks on loan.

The Cedar Centre is functional as well as attractive. In addition to our clinical areas we have a three-bed research ward with an attached lab. Our secretarial support, which is so critical for effective patient care, is also on site.
